Introduction
I have been calling coyotes for some time now and I Have found there are three key pieces of gear that a person needs to be successful. The first piece of gear is a coyote caller whether it is electronic, or manual got to have it. The second piece of gear is something to sit on. My last piece of gear that I use when hunting is camouflage. These are my top three pieces of gear that I use when calling coyotes.
First Piece of Gear
My first piece of gear is a caller. The caller can be an electronic one or a hand call. I have used both and they both have their place. I like the electronic caller for its automation and the number of sounds that you can put on it. However, it can get repetitive and can be overused. Hand calls I like for their variations and different tones and pitch you can create with them. I normally use a Foxpro electronic caller and have had good luck with them and have had good luck with them. When I use hand calls, they are just hand me down calls that have been used by my dad and probably by his dad.
Second Piece of Gear
The second piece of gear that I use is something to sit on. The chair that is use is a short fold out chair that is used in turkey hunting, but I use it for coyotes. I use a chair because when I am sitting on the ground my legs start to fall asleep and then I start moving them which isn’t the best. The chair also gets my up off the ground to where I can see better. You can use anything out there, but I look for something that is easy to carry and can be used quietly and set up quickly. Using a chair can help prolong the stands because you are more comfortable and give you a chance at a slow-moving coyote or even a bobcat.
Third Piece of Gear
The third piece of gear is some sort of camouflage. Yes, you can go out there and call a coyote with whatever you want to wear but camouflage can be a game changer. I have called coyotes in blue jeans and a t shirt and have had success. Camouflage can give you an advantage because you blend in and can give you a split second longer to make a shot before the coyote runs off. I look for a camouflage that will blend into the environment that I am calling in. Where I am it is desert landscape and, in the wintertime, it is gray and browns that I need to match.
Conclusion
In conclusion these are my top three pieces of gear to use when coyote calling. The first piece is a coyote call. It can be an electronic call or a hand call both can be effective. The Second piece of gear is something to sit on. A chair can help prolong a stand and make it more comfortable. The final piece of gear is camouflage. The camouflage will keep you hidden and give you a little more time to make a shot. These three pieces of gear can help make a difference on the next coyote stand.
